While in Leicester the other day (the first time for ages) I turned a corner and there was the new Curve theatre. Incredibly dramatic in the early evening with it's deep red walls behind a continuous glass facade and the Christmas lights outside. Made me smile.
The New Walk Museum in Leicester has an amazing collection of German Expressionist art. It now totals over 350 works and was initiated with acquisitions from an exhibition they held in 1944. They have produced a stunning 65th anniversary exhibition which continues until 28th February 2010 and includes more than 100 works by Marc, Kandinsky, Munter, Heckel, Schmidt-Rottluff, Kirchner, Neuschul, Kollwitz, Dix, Feininger and Grosz. It's a shame they were unable to produce a catalogue - maybe we'll have to wait another 65 years for that.
Happened to be talking to Peter last week about Tony Meeuwissen and what a brilliant illustrator he is. An exhibition of his work has just finished in Stroud. Peter showed me a small book and pack of playing cards by Meeuwissen called The Key To The Kingdom commissioned by the Victoria and Albert Museum and published in 2005 - so I had to buy a set.It also reminded me of one of my favourite books - Billy Liar - with a cover by Meeuwissen for Penguin.
